District 110 Profile
Mount Pleasant, a suburb of Charleston in Charleston County, is located on the central coast of South Carolina. It was founded in 1680 and is the home of Shem Creek (known for shrimp boats and seafood restaurants) and the Patriots Point Naval and Maritime Museum. In addition, the South Carolina State Ports Authority's Wando River terminal is also in Mount Pleasant. Historic Charleston has played a vital role in American history. With a commitment to historic preservation, Charleston is, in many ways, a place that remains more or less unchanged from the way it was 300 years ago - even in spite of wars, fires, hurricanes and the passage of time. Charleston today boasts 73 pre-Revolutionary buildings, 136 from the late 18th century and more than 600 others built prior to the 1840s. At the heart of downtown is the Old City Market featuring vendors and Gullah basket ladies. The cultural center of the area, Charleston offers an amazing array of residential lifestyles, outdoor activities and events. It is also home to several institutions of higher learning, including College of Charleston, The Citadel and the Medical University of South Carolina. Charleston also features some of the best quality and variety of restaurants anywhere, from five-star to down-home southern cooking. Each year, Charleston hosts many celebrations, festivals, and special events. Some of the most well known include the Southeastern Wildlife Exposition, the Annual Festival of Houses and Gardens, Spoleto Festival USA, and the Fall Candlelight Tour of Homes. All of District 110 is a hotbed for commerce. The area is home of one of America's busiest ports and a growing number of businesses. Since 1995, new and expanding businesses have invested more than $5 billion in the Charleston region.
