Strengthening South Carolina's Economy
The future of our state is dependent on developing a strong, vibrant economic climate. We must continue to work to attract businesses and jobs in industries that make our state competitive on a global scale. In order to accomplish this, we must set a tone for the state that is decidedly pro-business and pro-growth. This means, we begin by actively supporting our existing business culture through encouraging entrepreneurship, enhancing telecommunications and high tech growth and maximizing training opportunities for our workforce. In addition, we work to enhance South Carolina's roads, railways, and ports. When we enhance our transportation network, it not only benefits citizens, but also helps attract new companies to create jobs and boost our economy. |

Reforming Education
Today's global economy mandates that we take seriously our investment in our children's education. For South Carolina to compete, we must raise our education goals and help every school succeed by measuring progress, increasing parent involvement, promoting accountability and sharing innovation at all levels. Our children need to be prepared not only for higher education, but also for the real and changing world they'll face when they become adults. We must also work to fight the “brain drain” by encouraging our best and brightest students to attend South Carolina universities so they will stay and become our next generation of leaders and innovators. |

Lowering Tax Burdens on Working Families
Higher taxes make life much more difficult for the hard-working people of our state - and they keep South Carolina from being able to attract and retain jobs. We must diligently look for ways to lower the tax burden on the people of South Carolina. However, it is vital to keep government spending down as well. Lowering taxes and reducing spending will only work to encourage businesses to consider investing in our state. |

Responsibility and Stewardship
Responsible spending requires a concerted effort to put every decision within the context of what is best for the state's long-term success. It requires more than mere good intentions - we need to be willing to make the tough choices. We need to ask ourselves what is best for our state and we need to hold our state agencies accountable for their spending practices. In this way, we will better be able to focus our resources on the highest priority items.
Our responsibility is not exclusively a fiscal issue however. We have a moral responsibility to do our best to maintain and preserve our natural resources for the generations to come. We have to strive to create a climate where businesses can thrive without us losing our fantastic array of unspoiled landscapes, beaches and wildlife. |
